Paintings by Dijon Curley AVALON

My New You-Tube Video showcasing the works in my show AVALON

Thursday, March 3, 2011

This is the invite for my feature artist show at The Art Sales & Rental Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The show runs from March 1st until the 31st. Below are images of the works for the show as well as my artist statement.

 AVALON

I recently traveled to the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland. It was my first time traveling to the region and I immediately fell in love with the rugged beauty of the land. Amazing vistas, islands of rock and colourful houses captivated me the entire time I was there. In this new series of works, I wanted to bring to the viewer the same feeling I experienced and bring that amazing light and colour to the canvas.

In every painting I produce there is always an emotional connection, whether a lonely tree in a golden field of wheat, rolling hills next to a red barn or cliffs against a dramatic sky. I strive to capture a moment of tranquillity in my work through colour and movement, while balancing between realism and expressionism.

My chosen medium is acrylic. Its versatility allows me to play with light and shadow. While exaggerating these elements, I continue to focus on producing works that are believable.

In today's fast-paced world, with its emphasis on multitasking, we tend to be constantly moving. My intention is to either give the viewer the opportunity to stop for a moment and recall a memory that is both nostalgic and inspirational, or to take them to a place that allows reflection.

I drove to Cupids one morning and loved the funny shed along the water. I loved how the angle of the roof almost matched the angle of the hill. This is in the show AVALON. I've titled it Cupids Peak and is 24x30 Acrylic on Canvas.

Another piece in AVALON. This little shed captivated me all alone on the top of a hill of rock. It is titled Mid Morning, Hibbs Cove. It is 24x18 Acrylic on Canvas.
